(Yes it has England in it as well as NZ, but it's a nice image. :D)
Tell us a bit about your character. Doesn’t have to be too long, just giving a general idea
To strangers who first arrive on his islands, William is not the friendliest of nations. Until you prove that you have come to his lands in peace you're more likely to see the business end of a weapon pointed at you than see a smile on his face. It's nothing personal, he just values his independence and freedom highly. He also takes protecting his people and his lands very seriously.
Once he knows you're not an enemy he'll be more friendly, but it'll still take time to earn his trust. He's quite curious about learning new things, and has a good sense of humour. He believes strongly in the gods and legends of his lands, and sees and respects the guardian spirits (taniwha) that protect him and his people.
How much do you know about their history? Just a couple of paragraphs. Not too much detail~!
The Maori settled in New Zealand (NZ) in the late 1200s, and eventually became a nation of tribes who fought against each other to protect their lands and mana. A group of them went and settled on the Chatham Islands to the east in the 1500s, and developed their own pacifist culture. Abel Tasman, an explorer from the Netherlands arrived in 1642, but as he and his men tried to make landfall in an agricultural area; they were attacked by local Maori trying to protect their crops. Some of his men were killed, and he left without setting foot on NZ soil.
Captain Cook arrived over a century later on his first voyage to the Southern Hemisphere in 1769, and circumnavigated NZ. He didn't claim NZ for the British Empire on either of his voyages to there. The United Tribes of Aotearoa signed a Declaration of Independence in 1835 due to concerns that the French might try to take over, and the Americans established a consul in NZ in 1838 to protect their own trading interests in NZ (the Americans' diplomatic presence in NZ carried on from there to the present day).
NZ was claimed as part of the British Empire in 1840 when the Treaty of Waitangi was signed, and due to there being two versions of the document with different meanings, NZ went through a period of civil war that came to a head in the 1860s where the British Army was asked to step in, and resulted in land being confiscated from some of the tribes. After that the Colonial Government took control properly, and NZ began to change and grow into the nation it is today.

"Kaore! (No!)" Aotearoa ran and hid behind the meeting house. He could hear everyone calling him to come back, and to go with this man called England, but he didn't want to! How could they make a decision like this for him? Just because he was small doesn't mean he shouldn't get to decide what happens to him!
"Aotearoa!" He could still hear them calling him, and he disappeared into the bush behind the meeting house. He knew every inch of these forests: every path, every hiding place, every taniwha, and so on. What the chiefs said echoed in his mind as he ran: "it's for your own good", "England will keep you safe", "he's agreed to treat us the same as he treats his own citizens", "we will still retain our Mana as chiefs and be able to keep our lands", and "not much will change".
Things had changed already as the chiefs wanted to hand him over to England instead of letting him keep living among his people where he was happy. He found a good-sized tree, and started climbing. He hid in the tree's leafy canopy, and watched as some of his people and some of the weirdly clothed people searched the forest floor. He even saw the one called England among them, but he was sure none of them could see him...
"Aotearoa." The pronunciation was terrible, but there was no doubt who said it. "Please come down."
"Kaore!" Aotearoa clung more tightly to the tree. Surely it wouldn't up and hand him over too! He knew he couldn't be seen from the forest floor, so how did he find him?
"I'm not going to hurt you." England sighed and Aotearoa shifted a little in the tree to get a better view of him. He didn't look angry at all about him running away. "You are now my son, and I'll take care of you. Please come down as I'm not going anywhere until you do."
Aotearoa looked around at the nearby trees to see if it'd be possible to swap to another tree, but it wasn't. He guessed he could go up, but what would he do when he reached the top of the tree? Turn into a bird and fly away like Maui? No, that was just a legend. He looked down and saw England still staring up at him from the forest floor. He really wasn't going anywhere. He started to climb down to the forest floor, and England picked him up when he reached the ground to stop him running away again.
"You know, I have another son around your age," England said as he walked back to the meeting house with Aotearoa. "His name is Alex, and I'm sure the two of you will get along well."
"Kaore." Aotearoa squirmed around in England's arms, forcing the other nation to alter his grip to keep carrying him. He didn't really mean it this time, but he was still determined to be a little difficult. He couldn't let taking him away like this be easy, after all!
"Well, now you're just being difficult." England laughed. "Difficult seems to run in the family, so you'll fit in fine."
Your name: Jen.
Age: 30
Why did you join here? Interesting concept, and some of my other RPs are dead.
How long have you been RPing? Roughly 4.5 years, but I've only been RPing in the Hetalia fandom for 6 months.
