Pietro looked upon the great ships that now were commonplace in the great ports of Europe, as the major nations set out to claim territories in other continents- discovering new lands and nations to trade with, settle, or conquer.
Pietro of course did not care for conquest or colonizing- but these worldly events did open up opportunities for him. Surprisingly enough, many of the newly-discovered countries were uncultured pagans who had never heard the name of Christ. He could take advantage of Europe's growing influence in the world to spread the word of Christianity to those unfortunate savages. His mission was doubly important, since he had to make sure that they were brought to the Catholic faith- and not deceived by the corrupted word of the Protestant denominations.
So here he was, ready to board a ship to a literally god-forsaken land. He hadn't been cleared yet to embark any of the vessels, but he was sure one of the nations using this port would be more than happy to have their voyage blessed by a Papal presence.
